Meet Our Doc: Edwin de Zoeten, Digestive Health Institute

February 29, 2020

I started in the lab and got my
PhD in immunology. And then found that I really wanted to
work with patients. At the same time my mother developed
ulcerative colitis, which is one type of inflammatory bowel
disease, and so that really stimulated my interest in
IBD–ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s. And specifically, she
actually passed away from side effects of the disease. And so
that really pushed me to say there’s gotta be more that we
can do. Not only that, I just love kids. I love working with
kids. They’re incredibly resilient. They just know what
they’ve got, they work with it, they fight through the things
that they have to fight through to get better, and they do. And
we put kids through a lot of things to try and get them
better. But they tolerate it very well. And so that’s part of
the reason I like being in pediatrics.
